Become a volunteer

We are always happy to accpet help at the shelter, even if it’s just for one day. If you’re not ready to commit or don’t have enough time for long-term volunteering, we invite you to take our dogs for a walk during these times: 9.00 – 10:30 17:30 – 19:30 We recommend coming at the beginning of the shift. You don’t need to register in advance. Make sure to get dressed comfortably and be sure to wear comfortable shoes. 16-17 year olds need to have written parental consent; younger volunteers have to come with one of their parents. If you would like to come with a friend or colleague group, please read the “Group of guests” page.

Do you feel that your life is missing something? Would you like to learn more than you know now? What if you find what you have always been looking for, gain new knowledge and contribute to the well-being of homeless pets? We want to invite you to become a volunteer at “Lesė” and help to take care of dogs and cats and rescue them. It is very simple:

  • you must be at least 16 years old and have written parental permission (no longer required if you are 18);
  • register for new volunteers training on (here);
  • note whether you want to work with cats or dogs – this will decide which training you want to go to (or both)
  • when you receive an email you will need to come to the shelter and attend training. Once you have completed your training and signed a volunteering agreement, you will become our volunteer!

You can volunteer at “Lesė” shelter both in Vilnius and in Kaunas. The rules and procedures are the same: application form, letter, training and then volunteering. How much of your time do we ask for? During the two weeks, at least one shift, i.e. 3.5 hours of work with dogs or 3 hours of work with cats. After three months of non-attendance, you will have to go back to training. We have two shifts during the day: 9 am – 12:30 pm (dogs), 9 am – 12 pm (cats) and 5:30 pm – 9 pm (dogs), 6 pm – 9 pm (cats). The volunteer joins the shift when he can and when the shift is not yet complete.  During the shift, we clean dog cages, take dogs for a walk, feed them and cleanse the shelter. We clean cat cages in quarantine, clean litter boxes in free rooms, change the water and wash floors. It is important to mention that volunteers do not only work in the shelter! We are always looking for text writers, photographers who can contribute to social networking content, layout designers, installers, cameramen, new idea generators, drivers… Do you have talent? Don’t be afraid and write to, you are always welcome!

Students can earn social hours at “Lesė” by taking dogs for a walk. We accept students aged 16-17 with written parental consent, younger students are welcome to come with their parents. It is necessary to contact the responsible person before arrival:

Groups of up to ten people are always welcome at the shelter. If you want to visit and help volunteers with friends, colleagues or loved ones, you can do so in agreement with the shelter volunteers in advance. You can arrange your visit by writing an email here: You can help by cleaning free cat rooms with your volunteer as well as taking dogs for a walk. This is a great help for the shelter, as volunteers will be able to tidy up inside the shelter as you walk with your four-legged friend, and cats will get more attention and fondness. Will will be waiting for you during the shifts (9 am – 12:30 pm and 5:30 pm – 9 pm), please arrive on the first half of the shift,  because later animals are being fed and general shelter work is being done.

“Volunteering is unpaid not because it’s worthless, but because it’s priceless.”
